New figures indicate that
smartphones and tablets drove a surge in patent applications in 2012. International patent rose 20% in 2012 versus
2011. Virtually every major company in
the consumer electronics market is now involved in intellectual property
litigation with at least one of its competitors. So, everyone involved is now arming
themselves with a war chest of patents.
Even Chinese companies such as
Huawei and ZTE now lead the way in filling new patent applications. In the last three years, Huawei and ZTE have
increased their patent activity enormously.
ZTE is the single biggest filer of international patent applications over
the last three years. The development of
new technologies in smartphones, such as foldable screens and 3D hologram
projection, are opening up vast new areas for companies to file patent. The profitability of the smartphone and
tablet markets has been a real catalyst for the increase in both patent filing
and litigation by these companies.
